We have included guides for measuring blinds inside and outside of a recess and how to measure for curtains.
We are always on hand to guide you through this if you need us, please don't hesitate to contact our Customer Service team via our contact us page.
Points to remember when measuring:
- Always use a steel tape measure for accuracy.
- Always work in centimetres or inches, not a combination of the two! (We prefer centimetres)
- Double check your measurements before placing your order
Measuring Blinds
When measuring for blinds, there are two ways to fit, therefore two ways to measure. This is either recess or exact.
Exact means the drop and width you want your blind made to when it is to sit outside of the recess, recess means that you have measured your recess, and given us the smallest measurement of the recess width and drop, we will then make to this.
This goes for all blinds, the allowances we make are for the pulleys on roller blinds, etc. but we will do this for you. You just need to decide on where you will fit your blind, and give us accurate measurements.

Ensure that your recess is not obstructed in any way so that the blind can hang freely, and that it is at least 7.5cm deep. Measure the total width from A to B and the drop from C to D. Do this in at least three places to allow for irregularity in your windows. Make a note of the smallest of these measurements to the nearest millimetre. Please advise us with your order whether you will be fixing up into the top of your recess , or whether you will fix to your window frame inside the recess.
If this all sounds a bit complicated, or you have a bay or awkward shaped window you're not confident in measuring, you may want to utilise our "choose at home" service. We will visit you with fabric books, blind samples, etc. and measure for you. From here, we will generate your quote. We can also fit your curtains/blinds for you if you require. Measuring curtains
Curtains on a pole - measuring the width
When measuring for curtains to be fitted on a pole, you need to measure between the finials, (A)as shown above. Make sure you have enough space at the side of your window to allow the pole to come approximately 10cm over the window reveal on either side (B) plus your finial length (C). We make the allowances needed for the fullness of the curtains, so don't worry about this.

Curtains on a track - measuring the width
Your track will probably be a straight flat track, however if it has an allowance for overlap, as the one we have shown above, make sure you take this into your measurement overall. Measure from end to end on a track. A track may be longer than a pole, however if it is just for one straight window, it would normally overlap the recess by 10cm on each side. This is really down to personal preference.
Measuring for the drop
If you have not yet fitted your pole or track, then give us the drop measurement as 10cm above your window reveal (standard), to wherever you want the curtains to fall to, and we will work out the rest based on your choice of curtains.
If however, you have put up your pole or track, then you need to be a little more precise with your measurements

For all curtains, apart from eyelet heading or tab tops, you need to measure from the eye on the pole ring or track (as shown above), to wherever you want your curtains to drop to. This is your drop measurement.
For eyelet heading or tab tops, measure from the top of the pole (as shown below), to where you want your drop to finish, and give us this measurement. We will calculate the rest for you.
Normally full length curtains will sit approximately a centimetre off the floor, or if you would like them to "pool" or gather on the floor, add this measurement to your drop. Sill length curtains will sit approximately 10cm below the sill. Ensure your flooring is down before you take your measurements, as this will obviously impact on your drop. Be aware that there is no adjustment in eyelets or tab tops, due to the nature of their production and design, so please follow the measuring guidelines carefully especially if your pole is already up.

All our blinds are supplied with full fitting instructions and if you have ordered our standard Roman, it will be delivered with a baton to the back of the blind, with strings that will attach to a cleat, fixed to the wall.
